When musicians talk about music that inspired them, they often talk about classic tunes that have inspired generations of listeners. Or they go down the extremely obscure route to derive cool points. Admittedly, this is me going down the extremely obscure route, but I’m hoping to explain why.
Hidden in my record collection is a 12" of Nick Kamen's late 80's potboiler, 'I Promise Myself'. It's certainly no work of art; inane, soppy lyrics sung by a former model and Madonna hanger-on. But, if I sling those dodgy facts out of head, and let the track work it's magic, I'm in heaven: it's fantastically melodic, awash with Tony Mansfield-style synths, strummed acoustic guitar and pulsating drums patterns, it's undeniably a pretty-perfect piece of pure pop hokum. All that said, the 12" looks a lonely thing sat in between the likes of Joy Division, Suicide, Nash The Slash, John Foxx et 'al.
What I learned from a terrible rock and roll song
That's amazing - had a big daft grin on myself before it had even reached the halfway mark.
